Join The Family Fun Sept. 3 At Over The Narrows Gig Harbor-Tacoma Run

The second annual Over the Narrows Gig Harbor-Tacoma Run on Sept. 3 promises a day of fitness and fun for running enthusiasts and entire families. This year's event is expected to attract as many as 1,200 runners for the chip-timed, 10-mile run with spectacular views; the leisurely 2-mile Family Fun Run/Walk; the exciting Kids' Dash; and the festive Uptown Gig Harbor post-run party.

"All of the features that made Over the Narrows a unique, affordable and rewarding sport and family-friendly event are back, plus enhancements for an even more extraordinary experience," said Paul Van Winkle, race director and president-elect of Rotary Club of Gig Harbor North.

Check in starts at 7 a.m. at the Galaxy Theatres in Uptown Gig Harbor, followed by warm up exercises led by professionals from title sponsor Franciscan Health System. The chip-timed, 10-mile course loops across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and back, providing runners with a unique perspective of the surrounding beautiful scenery and narrows. Top finishers receive special recognition; custom tech shirts and stylish race medals are provided to the first 1,200 registrants.

The 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk, Kids' Dash, expanded children's games and new senior discounts extend the appeal of Over the Narrows to all ages. Competitors in the 2011 Silver Strider Grand Prix will earn points for completing Over the Narrows.

After the run, the festivities continue at the exclusive Over the Narrows party at Uptown Gig Harbor. Runners, friends and neighbors will celebrate the day with food, live music, refreshments and a beer garden, merchant discounts and more. Party admission wristbands are included with registration or available separately for a $5 donation.

"Over the Narrows offers something for everyone," said Van Winkle. "We expect serious runners from across the Pacific Northwest to compete in the 10 mile, and we invite our neighbors from surrounding communities to take a walk and join the party while supporting worthy local causes."

Franciscan Health System is the title sponsor for the second consecutive. "We are pleased to be on board again for this successful event that raises visibility for our community while promoting fitness and healthy living," said Candis Jordan, director of marketing & communications for the Franciscan Medical Group, the Franciscan organization's network of primary care and specialty care clinics and providers.

Over the Narrows is presented by Rotary Club of Gig Harbor North. All proceeds from the day's events benefit the club's local and international humanitarian service projects that improve health, literacy and quality of life for families.

In addition to the Franciscan Health System, event sponsors include: Route 16 Running and Walking, Uptown Gig Harbor, Holmes Chiropractic, Peninsula Gateway, Edward Jones, J.W.
