Franciscan Signs On As Lead Sponsor Of Desmond Tutu Event In Tacoma

The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation announced today that Franciscan Health System has signed on as lead sponsor for one of the most anticipated Pierce County events of 2011. The May 13, 2011 Be the Spark event features Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu as keynote speaker and marks the last scheduled U.S. public appearance by the Archbishop before his retirement.

"We are pleased that Franciscan has joined us to support this effort. The partnership is a great fit, as we share a commitment to creating healthy, safe and vibrant communities," said Rose Lincoln Hamilton, president and CEO of The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.

The Tacoma Dome event marks the beginning of a movement to strengthen Pierce County and make it a more positive, caring place to live. By challenging and inspiring individuals to take an active role in their community, the movement aims to create an environment that allows everyone, especially youths, the opportunity to lead healthy, productive lives.

"We are honored to have been invited by The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation to be a part of its important work and the upcoming historic visit by Archbishop Tutu," said Jon Flora, president of the Franciscan Foundation. The mission of the Franciscan Health System is to create healthier communities.

Franciscan joins the Community Foundation, Pacific Lutheran University, University of Puget Sound, and numerous other non-profits and concerned citizens in this movement.

"It is gratifying to be involved in this community-wide effort that Tacoma and Pierce County have embarked upon," said Archbishop Tutu, a prominent leader in the crusade for racial conciliation in South Africa. "Far too often, people think of themselves as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world."

More than 15,000 people are expected to attend Be the Spark event at the Tacoma Dome. Tickets go on sale Feb.15 through Ticketmaster. More information is available at
