Highline Medical Center: Stroke Care
Would you recognize a stroke if you or someone around you was having one? Would you know what to do?
Every 45 seconds, someone in the U.S. experiences a stroke - also known as a "Brain Attack." Strokes can be caused by an obstruction (like a blood clot), which blocks blood flow to the brain or by a blood vessel that ruptures and bleeds into the brain. New therapies and advanced treatment protocols can limit the damage from a stroke. But getting to an ER within the first few hours is critical.
Know the signs of stroke
If you think you or someone else might be suffering a stroke, act fast. You can use the word FAST to help remember the warning signs.
- Face - Ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop?
- Arms - Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Speech - Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?
- Time - If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately
Other signs of stroke include sudden onset of:
- Confusion or trouble understanding
- Difficulty seeing in one or both eyes
- Difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Severe headache with no known cause
Write down the time when symptoms first began. This information is important and might affect treatment decisions.
