Pregnancy and Childbirth
Midwives for Childbirth
Whether you’re expecting your first baby or your fourth, you want the best possible care for your big day and beyond.
What to expect
If you’re like most moms, you have a vision of how your ideal birth will go and may have already drafted a birth plan.
As your pregnancy progresses you will want to talk with your certified nurse midwife (CNM) about what to expect during labor and delivery. You can make your wishes known by creating a birth plan. Your CNM will help you determine what to include in your birth plan.
You may want to include things like:
- How you want to manage pain during labor, including breathing techniques, birthing balls, massage or use of a whirlpool tub
- The type of pain management you desire i.e. nitrous oxide, epidural block, etc.
- Am I a candidate for VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean)?
- Who you want with you during delivery
- It is also a good idea to make a list of things to bring to the hospital, pack a bag ahead of time so you have it ready to go when you go into labor
Giving birth is one of the most memorable times in a woman’s life. We take care of the details so you can focus on what’s important — your baby.
Experienced labor and delivery care
When it’s time to deliver, your CNM is your partner for labor and delivery. We provide a safe, positive birth experience for you and your family. At our family birth centers, you receive:
From private birthing suites with whirlpool tubs or water birth suites (at Tacoma, Enumclaw, and Seattle locations) to breastfeeding support, you and your support partner can welcome your new baby in a soothing, comfortable setting. We make you and your family our top priority — and we’re by your side every step of the way.
Expert care throughout the childbirth process
We respect your options for childbirth, pain management, feeding methods and more. Our childbirth preparation classes can help you make a birth plan and other important decisions for your big day.
To manage childbirth pain, we offer many natural options like birthing balls and stools, relaxation techniques, hydrotherapy and nitrous oxide. We believe in giving the birth that you choose and will provide comfort measures to manage the labor the way you desire. Just as with a doctor, women choosing to deliver using a CNM are able to select epidurals for effective pain management.
We have the largest midwifery program in the region, with our group of highly skilled, CNMs sharing and continuously expanding their experience and education to provide the support and care you desire.
While most women have normal pregnancy and deliveries, if you develop high-risk factors during your pregnancy or delivery, your CNM will work to ensure a smooth transition to an OB/GYN or maternal fetal medicine specialist (perinatologist).
The skilled providers at our family birth centers offer vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) for women who have previously given birth by C-section. Our providers have a 21 percent rate of success with VBAC compared to the Washington state rate of 18 percent success.*
A doula, also known as a birth companion, birth coach or post-birth supporter, is a non-medical person who stays with and assists a woman before, during, or after childbirth, to provide emotional support and physical help if needed. They also may provide support to the mother's partner and family. Continuous support during birth from a person outside the mother's family or social circle, such as a Doula, is associated with reduced mortality rates, improved overall health of the mother and the baby, shorter labor time, reduced risk of a C-Section, and a lower need for medical intervention or pain relief. Certified doulas at the Midwifery Birth Center help provide a positive birth experience – at no additional cost. Privately contracted doulas are also welcome at any of our Family Birth Centers.

Regardless of the location you choose, you’ll receive the caring, personal attention that we’re known for. At all of our locations we offer comfortable beds, sleeping space for your support person and beautiful artwork — all in a welcoming environment. This will help you to have the birth plan you want with as much comfort as possible.
Our new Midwifery Birth Center at St. Joseph is the only outpatient birth center on a hospital campus in Washington state. The new Midwifery Birth Center at St. Joseph is designed for women who have a strong desire for a natural, low-intervention birth experience utilizing either alternative or traditional pain management techniques.
