Women who are experiencing menopause may have moderate to severe symptoms that affect their health and quality of life. Hormone therapy can provide relief. Our knowledgeable gynecologists and other care providers can help you decide whether hormone therapy is right for you.
What is hormone therapy?
During perimenopause (transitional phase beginning several years before menopause), your body makes less estrogen, a hormone that helps control a woman’s reproductive cycle. Less estrogen causes symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia and bone loss.
Hormone replacement therapy, also known as menopausal hormone therapy, can help manage symptoms of menopause. Hormone therapy provides estrogen, and sometimes progestin and testosterone, to make up for the lower hormone levels in the body.
Benefits of hormone therapy
Hormone therapy can relieve menopause symptoms such as:
- Anxiety and other mood problems
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
- Vaginal dryness and discomfort
Risks of hormone therapy
Depending on the type of menopausal hormone therapy you take, it can increase your risk of developing certain types of cancer and other conditions, including:
- Breast cancer
- Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a vein)
- Gallbladder disease
- Heart attack
- Uterine cancer
Our recommendations for hormone therapy
Our recommendations for hormone therapy include estrogen therapy which can decrease or alleviate menopausal symptoms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves transdermal estrogen or compounded transdermal estrogen as these options typically have less risks associated than an oral estrogen therapy. Examples of transdermal estrogen includes creams, gels and/or patches. Generally, progesterone therapy is also added to estrogen therapy (as long as a woman has not had a hysterectomy) to help prevent uterine cancer. Compounded testosterone therapy is another option available as recommended by your provider.
