Bariatric Success Story: Tim Schmitz
Tim says turning 40 was a wake-up call. At 430 pounds, with his family history of heart disease, he imagined that he wouldn’t live long enough to see his daughters graduate, get married, or have kids. He dreaded going out in public. He couldn’t fit in a plane seat, or take a long trip in a car.
Something had to change
“I always said I would never have surgery, I could do it on my own,” Tim says. “But as I saw my weight go up, and up, I knew I had to do something dramatic. That’s when I went to the information session.”
Dr. Houseworth recommended gastric bypass for Tim. It was a big commitment, but Tim was ready. In the three months between the decision and the procedure, he worked hard and lost 30 pounds. He weighed in at 400 on the day of surgery. Now, four years later, Tim weighs 210.
“Being so large really limited me, but now I can do what I need to do to stay healthy,” Tim says. “I got down to 202 after surgery; the few pounds I’ve gained since then are all muscle. I lift weights, I run, I do the work.”
Other than his weight, what’s changed for Tim?
“Wow, where do I start?” Tim says he no longer wears a CPAP mask for sleep apnea. He went from three blood pressure medications to one. His cholesterol is the best it’s ever been. “I can run with no joint pain, where before it hurt me to walk up stairs. My clothes fit!”
Tim says his daughters’ friends used to think he looked “scary” because of his size — no longer.
“My family is proud of me for losing weight and adopting a healthy lifestyle. I feel so good about myself now, so I want to share my story. I want this for others, too.”
