Gastric Bypass Success Story: Randy Jones
Gastric bypass surgery saved this charter boat captain’s career
Gastric bypass surgery improves health conditions and mobility
At 425 pounds, Randy Jones had severe arthritis in his hips and took medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a bad heart. He couldn’t sleep without a CPAP machine and couldn’t walk without brace crutches.
“I was bedridden except when I was steering my boat,” Randy says. “It was all I could do to get up the dock.
When, to keep his skipper’s license, Randy had to send a video to the Coast Guard to show he could perform his job, he knew it was time for a major rescue. He attended a seminar at Franciscan Center for Weight Management. He completed a supervised medical weight-loss program prior to his gastric bypass surgery in March 2014. Within a year of his bariatric surgery, he had a heart stent placed and had both hips replaced. Today, he weighs 280 pounds, is off all medication, no longer needs a CPAP machine and enjoys freedom of movement. The shopkeeper at the wholesale tackle shop did not recognize him. Just six months earlier, she had regularly helped him up and down the stairs.
“Bariatric surgery was liberating,” he says. “I learned I wasn’t lazy. I enjoy cleaning the house, the boat and doing chores. I’m up on the fly bridge and all over the boat now. My deckhands better watch out!”
