Robotic Gastric Bypass Success Story: Cheryl Morris
Bariatric surgery was Cheryl’s key to ensuring a healthier life
Robotic gastric bypass offers quick recovery and a new, healthier lifestyle
Cheryl and her husband love to travel. At 337 pounds, she would whisper to the flight attendant to bring a seatbelt extender. She watched a co-worker struggle with diabetes and daily insulin injections, and thought about all the diabetes in her family. She decided, “I don’t want to live this way. I need to do everything I can going forward for my health.” Cheryl chose to have robotic gastric bypass surgery with Troy Houseworth, MD, FACS.
Her brother had gastric bypass surgery three years earlier, and even with his health challenges, had an easy time with surgery and recovery. “I was blessed with good health. I took it for granted, even with the extra pounds,” Cheryl said. Other than joint pain and high blood pressure, Cheryl had no major health issues.
“Fasting for two weeks before surgery was the hardest part,” she said. “I had surgery on a Tuesday, and I was off all pain medication by Saturday. I cannot say enough about Dr. Houseworth and all of the team. My nurse in the hospital had the surgery, too, and shared that. I appreciated that. They were wonderful!”
Three and a half years later, Cheryl has kept off 140 pounds. She is now a potential kidney donor for her brother, something that never would have been possible before her weight loss. “It’s a continuous, lifelong journey,” she stresses. “Life is real. You have to keep tabs on it or it can get out of control.”
When she struggled with a 10-pound weight gain, Cheryl dreaded going to her annual check-up. She called Amy, her dietitian, who helped her work out a plan to re-lose the weight. “Use your team. They are there to support you lifelong,” Cheryl says. “They reinforced how well I’ve done, and helped motivate me again.”
