Gastric Sleeve Success Story: Amanda Emerson
Amanda forged her own path to wellness with bariatric surgery
Gastric sleeve surgery supports a healthy, active lifestyle
A surgery scheduler at Franciscan Center for Weight Management, Amanda considered carefully before choosing bariatric surgery as the right option for her. The stigma of weight loss surgery as ‘the easy way out,’ made it difficult. “My family always told me I could do it on my own,” she says. “My parents lost about 70 lbs. themselves. Losing weight wasn’t my problem. It was keeping it off. I started and stopped the process four times before following through on my decision to have surgery.”
At age 27, Amanda weighed 354 lbs. She had no serious health issues, but they were looming. Her blood pressure and cholesterol were climbing steadily. She chose to have gastric sleeve surgery with Dr. Anwar in June 2014.
Amanda followed her pre-surgery diet and was down to 328 lbs. at the time of surgery. Her BMI was 54. Today, her BMI is 38 and she has kept off 124 lbs. “Sharing more with others would probably help keep me more accountable,” she admits, adding, “Don’t get discouraged. Everyone hits a plateau. Find your support system. Dr. Anwar and the staff have all been super supportive and nonjudgmental.”
Amanda now enjoys walking, exercising and playing with her friends’ kids. “I’m more active, more willing to go out and do stuff,” she says. “I used to dread it.
“Don’t let other people’s stereotypes and opinions make your decision for you,” she advises. “And don’t take the decision lightly. Take your time and do your research. This is not a magic fix. It is a lifestyle change, and it is work. But it’s all worth it.”
