Sports Concussion Management: Primary Care
Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries. They are the result of rapid impact to the skull that “jostles” the brain. A variety of youth sports can result in brain trauma, from football and soccer to cheerleading and competitive dance.
Signs and symptoms can vary greatly from mild to severe, and may develop at the time of injury or appear days later. The athlete may or may not lose consciousness. Some of the most common signs and symptoms of sports-related concussion to watch for include:
- Not feeling right
- Sensitivity to light and/or sound
- Trouble with concentration or memory
- Mood changes: sadness, nervousness
- Sleep changes
As a young athlete’s brain is still growing and developing, it is very important to have your athlete evaluated by a qualified medical professional. If you suspect a sports concussion, call the athlete’s primary care provider or go to the Emergency Services department for a medical evaluation. You may also be referred to our Sports Concussion Program for comprehensive testing and diagnosis.
Sports Concussion Program
CHI Franciscan’s Sports Concussion Program provides a collaborative, community approach to manage sports-related concussions in Kitsap County. Our goal is to assure our young athletes receive the same concussion management support afforded collegiate and professional athletes.
Working closely with schools, athletic directors and primary care providers, we offer diagnosis and management of sports concussions and act as a liaison between those involved in the student’s concussion care. Our evidence-based concussion protocol includes the most up-to-date recommendations for both return-to-play and return-to-learn guidelines.
Ask your provider about a referral to our Sports Concussion Program. For more information, or to speak to our referral coordinator, call 360-782-5700.
