Neck and Shoulder: Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Care
Neck, or cervical, pain can come from a number of musculoskeletal disorders and diseases, such as muscle strain, accidents and spine fractures, and can involve any of the tissues in the neck. Some of the most common shoulder conditions include bursitis, rotator cuff tears and tendinitis.
CHI Franciscan orthopedic providers and surgeons specializing in neck and shoulder conditions are here to help. Located all around the Puget Sound region of Washington, our expert surgeons and rehabilitative therapists provide patient consultations and excel in diagnosing and treating neck or shoulder pain.
Shoulder treatment options
Treatments often include medications, such as corticosteroid injections, physical therapy or shoulder surgery, if conservative methods have failed to bring relief.
Understanding shoulder replacement
The shoulder joint can be replaced by an artificial shoulder for pain caused by arthritis or when the shoulder is severely fractured or broken. Although shoulder joint replacement is less common than knee or hip replacement, it is just as successful in relieving joint pain. For shoulder joint replacement, your surgeon will make an incision (cut) over your shoulder joint to open up the area. Then your surgeon will:
- Remove the head (top) of your upper arm bone (humerus)
- Cement the new metal head and stem into place
- Smooth the surface of the old socket and cement the new one in place
- Close your incision with staples or sutures
- Place a dressing (bandage) over your wound
When to consider shoulder replacement
Shoulder replacement surgery is usually done when you have severe pain in the shoulder area, which limits your ability to move your arm. Causes of shoulder pain may include osteoarthritis, poor result from a previous shoulder surgery, rheumatoid arthritis or broken bone or torn shoulder tissues.
