Multiple Sclerosis - Neurosciences
If you or a loved one has multiple sclerosis (MS), you want the best possible care that’s close to home. At CHI Franciscan Health, our neurological experts lead the field in advanced care for people with MS.
What is multiple sclerosis?
MS is a neurological (nervous system) disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. MS is more common in women and usually begins between ages 20 and 40.
MS damages the myelin sheath (protective covering that surrounds nerve cells) and slows or blocks nerve signals that control a wide variety of bodily functions. Learn more about multiple sclerosis in our Health Library.
Innovative treatment for multiple sclerosis
Although no cure exists for MS, we offer treatment therapies that can slow the progression of the disease and manage your symptoms. With deep expertise and the latest treatments and technologies, we focus on helping you maintain your quality of life.
Among our treatment options for MS, we offer intrathecal pumps, which are implanted under the skin of your abdomen, to deliver medication directly to your spinal cord. Your intrathecal pump is programmed to slowly release medications such as:
- Morphine to relieve pain
- Baclofen to relieve spasticity (muscle rigidity and spasms)
