ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease): Neurosciences
If you or a loved one is suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it can be stressful for you and your family. Our multidisciplinary team provides dedicated, compassionate care for people with ALS in our patient-focused clinic in Tacoma.
What is ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a nervous system (neurological) disease that affects nerve cells in the spinal cord that control muscle movement. ALS is often called Lou Gehrig’s disease after the famous baseball player who had the disorder.
ALS affects nerve cells that transmit electrical signals from the brain to the muscles. The disease causes the neurons to deteriorate and die off, which causes progressive muscle weakness and loss of physical function.
