St. Joseph Medical Center Sustains Elite Ratings for Heart Valve Surgeries
St. Joseph’s cardiothoracic program has again earned two top-tier, 3-Star ratings from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for patient care and outcomes in heart valve surgeries for both isolated mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR) and for isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR). The current analysis of data covers the three-year period from January 2016 through December 2018.
Only 21 of 992 participating programs — from all 50 states and Canada — achieved a 3-Star rating for both MVRR and AVR. St. Joseph’s program has maintained the coveted 3-Star rating for AVR since July 1, 2013 and for MVRR since July 1, 2015.
The STS 3-star rating denotes the highest distinction for surgery quality performance. The STS National Adult Cardiac Surgery Database, analyses and comprehensive rating system together comprise the premier benchmarking tool for cardiac specialty programs.
“This is risk-stratified data, and is widely considered to be the most accurate, valid, outcomes-oriented medical database available,” said Craig Hampton, MD, FACS, Medical Director of Cardiac Surgery for CHI Franciscan. “Sustained excellence is very hard to achieve. This continued national recognition is something to be truly proud of, and reflect the excellence and dedication of the myriad professionals that comprise the CHI Franciscan cardiac surgical team.”
