Choosing a Cancer Program
You have many choices when it comes to cancer care; so it can be hard to decide where your care will ultimately be. To help you make your decision, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Cancer Care has assembled this list of questions to ask when viewing any cancer care program.
Does the program have an integrative team approach?
Do different members of your care team work separately to treat your cancer or does the cancer care team share knowledge and resources with other members of the team in order to give you a collaborative approach to treatment? An integrative team approach can help manage treatment-related side effects and lower the chances of anything being missed in treatment.
At Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, not only are you a part of the team, you’re the most important member. Here you’ll partner with your provider who is part of a multidisciplinary care team to share in the decisions about your treatment. We offer the largest patient navigation program in the Puget Sound, providing you with a consistent point of contact who can help you access all the resources you need, answer questions and listen to your concerns.
As a team, all of the specialists involved in your care will bring a unique expertise to your care to create a personalized treatment plan for your specific cancer. As an example of our team approach and commitment to quality, cancer physicians meet at weekly Cancer Conferences (Tumor Boards) to review and collaborate on recently diagnosed cases. They discuss what additional diagnostic studies might be beneficial, the available treatment options and if clinical trials or studies are currently open that might benefit the patient.
What is the expertise and specialty of your care team?
Do the providers on your care team represent a variety of specialties and do they have board certification? Is the care team recognized for their level of care?
Here at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, the breadth and depth of our cancer care is reflected in the caliber of our expert physicians. Your multidisciplinary cancer team comprises nationally recognized experts, who are board certified and many are also fellowship trained, dedicating themselves to specific types of cancer. Specialized experience means you can expect the very best in cancer care, with a record of excellent outcomes.
Is the facility easy to access?
How far are you from the nearest treatment location? Are there any services available closer if the main facility is far away?
With locations throughout the Puget Sound, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Cancer Care gives you access to cancer diagnostics and treatment options that are the region’s best. We offer support groups and classes, education and resources, survivorship planning and Cancer Resource Centers, at locations close to where you live and work.
Does the program offer clinical trials?
Does the cancer care program participate in clinical trials? Taking part in research studies can give you access to the newest ways to treat cancer and help advance the future of cancer treatment. Ask your provider for information about clinical trials.
Has the program received recognition?
You’ll want to check if the cancer center is accredited by a recognized national program. Accreditation means the cancer center meets specific standards that can impact your care. In general, national recognition means you can expect a higher level of care.
Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Cancer Care is considered to be among the best cancer treatment centers in the country. But you don’t have to take our word for it: We’ve earned several local and national awards and accreditations. That means exceptional care and better outcomes — and a better quality of life — for you.
Are practical support services provided?
For every step of your cancer journey, you should feel you have support services to turn to. Whether it’s a support group, resources for personal needs such as free caps and wigs or financial assistance, you’ll want to learn if your cancer care center can support you in every way you need.
At Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, we offer services for many of your practical needs, including basic needs for food and clothing; medical needs, including financial assistance; personal need, such as mastectomy bras and head coverings; support from charities; and support and comfort with classes and support groups.
Is spiritual support available?
Practical care is only one aspect of treatment and healing. In order to promote healing of the whole person, spiritual care should be provided upon request.
As part of our spiritual care services, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health offers chaplains 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whatever your belief system, our chaplains can provide support to those who are coping with grief or loss.
