CHI Franciscan Rehabilitation Hospital Opens in Tacoma
$25 million facility in partnership with Kindred Healthcare is first-of-its kind in western Washington
Tacoma, Washington - CHI Franciscan Health and Kindred Healthcare, Inc. announced the grand opening of their new state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital in Tacoma. The specialized hospital will treat patients recovering from acute injuries and illness, including stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries and traumas. The $25 million investment brings together the joint expertise of premier Northwest health system CHI Franciscan Health and Kindred Healthcare, a leading provider of post-acute care services. The hospital will open to patients at the end of June.
“Ensuring our communities throughout the Puget Sound have access to the highest quality care is at the center of everything we do,” said Ketul J. Patel, CEO of CHI Franciscan Health. “Our new state-of-the-art hospital will double our current capacity, allowing us to care for the increasing demand of patients in need of specialized rehabilitative services.”
The 60-bed hospital, western Washington’s first and only freestanding inpatient rehab hospital, will provide ongoing care and specialized treatment for patients who have experienced the debilitating effects of a severe injury or illness. Customized rehabilitation services are tailored to the individual needs of patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions, trauma, spinal cord injury, amputation and orthopedic injury. The interdisciplinary clinical team is made up of physicians, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, case managers, social workers and dieticians - all specifically trained in the field of rehabilitation.
“Western Washington is one of the fastest growing regions of the country and the need for best-in-class rehabilitation services is growing right along with it,” said Jason Zachariah, President of Kindred Rehabilitation Services. “Our new hospital will serve patients with needs across the rehabilitation spectrum and greatly enhance care services in the community.”
As the Puget Sound population grows, the number of patients in need of rehabilitation services is expected to increase as well. The rehabilitation department at St. Joseph Medical Center served more than 600 patients in 2016 alone; 455 were over the age of 60. The new facility nearly doubles the existing capacity and delivers the highest level of specialized rehabilitation care.
“This new facility will allow our highly-skilled team to continue providing premium care for patients recovering from acute trauma or illness,” said Anne McBride, vice president of CHI Franciscan Health Post-Acute Care Services. “Bringing together CHI Franciscan’s extensive care network and Kindred’s specialized rehabilitation capabilities will allow us to deliver a full continuum of care for patients.”
