CHI Franciscan Health Designated Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care
TACOMA, Wash. - In an effort to help prospective parents find hospitals that deliver quality maternity care, Premera Blue Cross announced that five hospitals within CHI Franciscan Health are among the first hospitals in the nation to receive the Blue Distinction® Center for Maternity Care designation, a new designation under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.
"At CHI Franciscan we are honored to be recognized for our exceptional care when it comes to caring for our littlest patients," said Drew Robilio, MD, medical director of women's and children's services at CHI Franciscan. "Our skilled obstetricians, gynecologists, certified nurse midwives, nurses and staff provide compassionate and personalized care around the clock to thousands of families every year."
Nearly four million babies are born in the U.S. annually, making childbirth the most common cause of hospitalization. The new Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns that fall into the category of early elective delivery, an ongoing concern in the medical community. Hospitals that receive a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care designation agreed to meet requirements that align with principles that support evidence-based practices of care, as well as having initiated programs to promote successful breastfeeding. The Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care program also evaluates hospitals on overall patient satisfaction, including a willingness by patients to recommend the hospital to others.
CHI Franciscan hospitals designated as a Blue Distinction Center include:
- Harrison Medical Center, Bremerton
- St. Elizabeth Hospital, Enumclaw
- St. Francis Hospital, Federal Way
- St. Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma
CHI Franciscan hospitals designated as a Blue Distinction Plus Center include:
- Highline Medical Center, Burien
Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality providers for their specialty care needs in the areas of bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacements, spine surgery, and transplants. Research shows that compared to other facilities, those designated as Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients.
"Premera continuously works with our provider partners to improve quality of care," said David Buchholz, medical director for provider engagement at Premera Blue Cross. "Premera has been recognized by providers as a collaborative partner in identifying and improving upon this work. Blue Plans, nationally and locally, have been working with providers to identify, recognize and award high-quality care. Maternity care is an important entry point into health care and we are pleased to recognize hospitals that provide excellent maternity care. This recognition which we display proudly on our provider directory, provides our customers with an added layer of comfort when choosing their place of care. We are proud of the CHI Franciscan hospitals that have been recognized for this new program."
Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies across the nation have recognized more than 280 hospitals as Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care. Hospitals receiving this designation were assessed using a combination of publicly available quality information and cost measures derived from BCBS companies' medical claims.
