CHI Franciscan Health Announces Grand Opening of St. Anthony Hospital’s New Patient Floor
Gig Harbor, Washington - CHI Franciscan Health, a leading health care provider in the Pacific Northwest, announced today the grand opening of St. Anthony Hospital’s state-of-the-art fifth floor that will offer enhanced, high-quality patient care to more Gig Harbor area residents. The new expansion will serve as the hospital’s surgical floor, adding 32 more patient beds to increase the hospital’s overall capacity by 40 percent.
“Building out the fifth floor of St. Anthony Hospital ensures we are able to meet the health care needs of our growing communities in West Pierce and Kitsap counties,” said Ketul J. Patel, Chief Executive Officer of CHI Franciscan Health. “Today’s grand opening is a testament to CHI Franciscan’s commitment to increase access to high quality care and serve more patients and families throughout region.”
The fifth floor will be designated as the hospital’s new surgical floor, whose innovative design will increase the quality and safety of the hospital and enhance the experience of patients and families. The 25,000-square foot expansion increases the hospital’s total bed count to 112 beds, up from 80 beds, keeping up with the region's steady growth in hospital admissions. The expansion will provide relief for the high occupancy rate at St. Anthony Hospital, increasing patient satisfaction while reducing patient emergency room wait time. Additionally, under the new layout, the medication dispensing area was strategically designed to promote uninterrupted handling of medications which will help prevent medication errors. Finally, nursing staff will have increased visibility into patient rooms which will allow for increased observation and direct line of sight.
“This groundbreaking expansion will further transform St. Anthony Hospital, allowing CHI Franciscan to provide its high-quality, premier health care services to more patients in the region,” said David Schultz, Market President for the peninsula region of CHI Franciscan. “We are proud of the investment we have made, and are confident that this expansion will help us continue to provide exceptional health care services to all of our patients.”
CHI Franciscan submitted a Certificate of Need (CON) request in June 2016, signaling the need to meet the growing health care needs of Gig Harbor residents. On November 29, 2016, the Washington State Department of Health granted the CON to CHI Franciscan, giving the health care provider the opportunity to expand its care to more residents.
“On behalf of the Gig Harbor community and the local businesses, we are very excited to have CHI Franciscan Health as one of our key partners,” said Warren Zimmerman, President and CEO of Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. “We appreciate the fact that they recognized the community’s growing need for additional hospital beds and responded accordingly by expanding St. Anthony Hospital. We are confident this new expansion will provide much needed relief to the patients and families throughout Gig Harbor and beyond.”
In the coming years, Gig Harbor is anticipating at least a three percent growth in population. St. Anthony Hospital’s new $15.6 million expansion will help support the region’s forecasted growth rate, especially those aged 65 and older throughout Pierce County, an age group that tends to be the highest users of medical services.
This is a transformative time for CHI Franciscan Health, which is pioneering the way health care is delivered through its leading systems of care that covers more than 8,000 square miles and more than 2 million residents throughout the Pacific Northwest. In addition to the fifth floor at St. Anthony Hospital, CHI Franciscan Health recently formed a clinical partnership and strategic affiliation with Virginia Mason Health System and construction is underway for its half-billion dollar Harrison Medical Center- Silverdale expansion, further demonstrating the health system’s commitment to expand patient access and improve the quality of care and safety across the Puget Sound region.
