CHI Franciscan Health and Kindred Healthcare Break Ground on $25 Million Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital
CHI Franciscan Health and Kindred Healthcare, Inc. broke ground today on a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital in Tacoma. The $25 million investment brings together the joint expertise of local market leader CHI Franciscan Health, a premier Northwest health system, and Kindred Healthcare, a leading provider of post-acute care services.
The 60-bed, state-of-the-art acute rehabilitation hospital will be dedicated to the treatment and recovery of individuals who have experienced the debilitating effects of an acute injury or illness. It will offer specialized treatment programs for patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions, trauma, spinal cord injury, amputation and orthopedic injury. The interdisciplinary clinical team will include physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, case managers, social workers and dieticians, all specifically trained in the field of rehabilitation.
“Our partnership with Kindred allows us to expand access to much needed post-acute rehabilitation services for the growing South Sound population,” said Ketul J. Patel, CEO of CHI Franciscan Health. “We’re dedicated to meeting the needs of our region and we look forward to working with Kindred to provide our communities with a full continuum of healthcare services.”
CHI Franciscan Health’s St. Joseph Medical Center served more than 600 patients in its inpatient rehabilitation unit in 2016. Of those patients, 455 were over the age of sixty, and the number of patients seeking services is expected to increase as residents of the South Sound age. The new, expanded facility will enable the program’s highly skilled team to continue delivering the highest level of care across the rehabilitation spectrum.
“We’re thrilled to be collaborating with CHI Franciscan Health to create the first freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the Puget Sound Region,” said Jason Zachariah, President of Kindred Rehabilitation Services. “This hospital will provide outstanding care for patients recovering from a variety of illnesses, injuries and conditions. I am certain that this strong partnership will greatly enhance the rehabilitation services in the community and will benefit residents in the area in many ways.”
"Patients recovering from a stroke or other traumas that require rehabilitation care need time to heal and regain strength and mobility," said Anne McBride, President of CHI Franciscan Health Post-Acute Care Services. "A state-of-the-art hospital built to suit the specific needs of post-acute care patients will provide us the resources we need to improve and speed their recoveries. We are excited to be able to reach more patients and serve them better with this new facility."
