Virginia Mason Birth Center Welcomes Its First Newborn
SEATTLE – (Aug. 12, 2020) – Virginia Mason Birth Center, an Alliance with CHI Franciscan Health, welcomed its first birth on Tuesday, the day after the center officially opened. The baby, a boy, was born at 5:45 p.m.
“The baby and his mother are doing great,” said Dr. Jerry Anderson, CHI Franciscan Health obstetrician/gynecologist and medical director. “I wish to extend my congratulations to our VM and CHI Franciscan Health team for reaching this exciting milestone. We look forward to welcoming many more babies this year and beyond.”
The center – designed to accommodate as many as 1,200 births a year – includes a Level 2 special care nursery for newborns who need special medical attention. Staffed by certified OB/GYN providers and certified nurse midwives, the new birth center also includes:
- Private birthing suites
- Three private labor and delivery rooms, six postpartum beds and two obstetric triage bays
- Personalized birth plans that include many options and respect the preferences of expecting mothers, including water births, midwifery and doula care, and pain management, including nitrous oxide
- On-site lactation consultants and online childbirth preparation classes
To keep patients and staff safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, every person is screened before entering the birth center, there are limitations on visits, face masks are required, and physical distancing is required.
