Skin Cancer

If you have skin cancer, it’s reassuring to know that recently developed treatments are available, providing a better chance for a cure and improving patients’ quality of life. At CHI Franciscan Health, our dermatologists and other skin cancer specialists use the latest, most advanced therapies for treating skin cancer.

Screening and diagnosis

Although skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, it’s highly curable if it’s detected early through regular screening. Three most common skin cancers are:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma

Our treatments for skin cancer

At CHI Franciscan Cancer Care, our oncologists usually treat early-stage skin cancers with surgery to remove the cancer cells.

Your oncologist may recommend other treatments in addition to or instead of surgery, depending on the type and stage of your skin cancer. Using a team approach, experts from several specialties will work together to design a personalized treatment plan specifically for your individual case, which may include one or more of the following:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Immunotherapy for melanoma, to activate the body’s own immune system to fight the cancer
  • Radiation therapy
  • Targeted therapies such as antibodies that target specific molecules within cancer cells
