Homeless Families Benefit From $10,000 Franciscan Donation

A gift of $10,000 from Franciscan Health System will provide 12 months of shelter and support services for a family in the FUSION housing program. As principal sponsor for the 2012 annual FUSION art soiree fundraiser on Aug. 1, the donation will be used for operational expenses including maintenance, supplies, utilities, insurance and case-management costs.

"We are pleased to support FUSION in its endeavor to provide transitional housing and support services for the homeless," said Franciscan Chief Executive Officer Joe Wilczek. "At Franciscan, our mission is to create healthier communities. We strive every day to make a lasting difference in the lives of our patients and in the quality of life for communities we serve. Our mission is our compass. Through our support of FUSION, our mission is in action and helping open doors of hope."

FUSION (Friends United to Shelter the Indigent, Oppressed and Needy) manages and maintains fully-furnished housing units: 11 condominiums in Federal Way and five homes in Northeast Tacoma. More than 83 percent of the families served by FUSION have moved on to permanent housing, becoming stable and self-sufficient over the past 19 years of providing services.

"Franciscan's generous gift to the FUSION mission is an example of how community partnerships can provide housing and valuable support services to needy families in very tough economic times," notes FUSION Founder Peggy LaPorte. "By working together, we can help families break the cycle of homelessness and build stronger families in our communities."

Tacoma-based Franciscan has been a long-time supporter of FUSION, granting a $10,000 sponsorship in 2009 and Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2004. The Franciscan organization includes St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, which has served the community since 1987.

FUSION's annual art event on Aug. 1 raises operating funds for the year. The 2012 goal is $125,000 for the transitional housing program. "Moulin Rouge®" this year captures the fun and romance of turn-of-the-century Paris. The event will feature an art walk, entertainment, live and silent auctions, and a raffle for a seven-day ocean cruise for two. Catered appetizers, wine, beer and espresso beverages will be served.
