Mimi Pattison, MD, who is the medical director for the Franciscan Health System's hospice and palliative medicine programs, has been named chair of the Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission. Her one-year term continues through June 2012.

The commission, which is part of the state Department of Health, protects public health and safety by assuring the competency and quality of physicians and physician assistants.

Gov. Chris Gregoire appointed Dr. Pattison to the panel in 2008.

"I am honored to have had the privilege of serving the medical profession and the public on this important commission for the past three years," said Dr. Pattison. "I also am very honored to now serve as the commission's chair. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities this will bring."

The Medical Quality Assurance Commission establishes and monitors qualifications for licensure, and enforces medical practice standards and professional conduct through discipline and continuing education. The commission has 21 members, including 13 physicians, who represent the state's nine congressional districts.

Dr. Pattison is recognized for her leadership in hospice care and palliative medicine. In 2010, she received The Regence Foundation's Sojourns Award for advancing palliative care (the medical specialty focused on relieving pain, symptoms and stress of serious illness) in the Puget Sound area.

Also in 2010, Franciscan received the Catholic Health Association's premier national award for excellence, effectiveness and innovation in its hospice and palliative care programs for which Dr. Pattison is the medical director.

The Franciscan Health System includes hospitals in Tacoma, Federal Way, Lakewood, Enumclaw and Gig Harbor, and a network or primary care and specialty care clinics and providers in Pierce, King and Kitsap counties.
