Franciscan Foundation Awards Scholarships To 40 Franciscan Employees

The Franciscan Foundation recently awarded scholarships to 40 Franciscan Health System employees who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees, or certificates, in health care or career-related subjects. The scholarships totaled $58,050.

"We are grateful for our donors whose generous gifts make these scholarships possible,” said Foundation President Greg Unruh. "As an organization that is mission-driven, we hire outstanding people with a commitment to serving our faith-based mission. Education is a life-long journey, and the Foundation’s growing scholarship program enables our employees to continually improve their professional skills, which ensures that our patients receive the best possible care."

Since 1996, the Foundation has approved more than 350 scholarships totaling $555,350 to Franciscan employees. The scholarships are funded through charitable gifts to the Foundation from Franciscan employees, grateful Franciscan patients and their families, and other friends of the Franciscan Health System.

The scholarships are given to employees who meet specific criteria and are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees primarily in nursing and other health care-related professions. Providing educational assistance is one of the many ways that the Franciscan Health System recruits and retains employees, and helps the organization meet its strategic goal of being the best place to work.

The Franciscan Foundation is the charitable giving arm of the Franciscan Health System, a not-for-profit organization that includes St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, St. Elizabeth Hospital in Enumclaw, St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care in University Place, and the Franciscan Medical Group network of primary- and specialty-care clinics, physicians and other professional providers in Pierce, King and Kitsap counties. With approximately 8,400 employees, Franciscan is one of the largest private employers in the South Puget Sound region.
