Community Kids Day
Date/Time: Saturday, September 19th. Volunteer shifts are 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., including breaks and a free lunch. There will be an advance orientation on Wednesday, September 9th at 10:30 a.m. or Thursday, September 10th at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, September 19th, Lakewold is hosting our 7th Kids Day, and we are seeking volunteers to assist with activities and crafts.
Kids Day encourages discovery of nature and connection to community. In addition to outdoor exploration, there will be storytelling, face painting, and a special appearance by Rhubarb, the Tacoma Rainiers’ mascot. Entrance donations benefit the Lakewood Area Shelter Association, and women and children throughout Pierce County.
Number of volunteers needed: 15
How volunteers will be used: The day of the event, volunteers will help at various stations where we’ll have a variety of simple craft projects, and a Passport activity encouraging families to explore areas throughout the gardens.

Woody Plant Propagation Workshop
Date/Time: Thursday, September 24th from 9 a.m. to noon
Location:Lakewold Gardens, 12317 Gravelly Lake Drive Southwest, Lakewood, WA 98499
Lakewold’s horticulture department presents a free garden workshop. Kathy will teach us about the basic techniques used in woody plant material propagation. Van Veen Nursery has been involved with Lakewold over the past four years, propagating all of the rhododendron and azalea cuttings for Lakewold Gardens. You will have the opportunity to practice the techniques she teaches, propagate a specimen, and take home a cutting.
Number of volunteers needed: 25
How volunteers will be used: The workshop will feature an hour long class, and two hours of practicing propagation in groups. The instructor, horticulture committee members, and garden staff will be available to mentor.

Pierce County Hunger Walk
Date/Time: Sunday, October 4, 2015; Onsite registration starts at noon. Run begins at 1 p.m.; walk begins at 2 p.m.
Location: Ft. Steilacoom Park, 9601 Steilacoom Boulevard, Lakewood, WA
Come join us as we celebrate our 35th year in our fight against hunger in Pierce County by participating in our 5K and 10K Walk and Run. The Hunger Walk is a fun event for the whole family and a great opportunity to raise funds to feed people who otherwise go hungry. Held at beautiful Ft. Steilacoom Park, this event is family and pet friendly and has accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. Half of all proceeds go to the Emergency Food Network, and donors choose a food bank or hunger relief organization who will receive the other half of the proceeds from their donation.

Champions Mentor Program
Working in partnership with the Clover Park School District, CISL coordinates the Champions Mentoring Program, at three elementary, three middle schools and one high school. CISL screens, trains, supports and evaluates adult and high school mentors using Best Practices resources. Mentors meet with their students at the school for one hour, once a week. They are trained to help students set and reach academic and personal goals.
Date/Time: Flexible depending on mentor’s schedule, but is Monday – Friday during school hours.
