Summertime is here, and with it comes a host of opportunities to help your community! Join United Way of Pierce County as we continue our Launch into Literacy to help overcome summer learning loss! Volunteers are needed on Wednesday, July 9th at Arrowhead Apartments in Lakewood and at McCarver Park in Tacoma. Garden Helpers - Volunteer Gardening

The 10 acres of historic Lakewold Gardens are about to burst into bloom this spring and summer! Do you get excited when you see the first buds of spring? Do you sometimes stop to pull an unintended weed because you just have to pull it? Well, working in the gardens with our knowledgeable staff might be just right for you.

Date/Time: Monday-Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Location: Lakewold Gardens - 12317 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, Lakewood, WA 98499

How volunteers will be used: Responsibilities vary from raking leaves to learning the art of selective pruning, planting up flats of annuals or helping to troubleshoot plant and pest problems. These are just a few of the tasks that the horticulture team tackles throughout the year. Shifts of 2-4 hours work well.

Rhododendron Work Party

We are a historic garden on 10 acres in Lakewood, and we have a collection of 900 rhododendrons. In early June mass "deadheading" needs to be done (snapping off the dead flowers after spring) to maintain the health of the plants for the next season.

Date/Time: Saturday, June 14th from 8:30am-noon.
Location: Lakewold Gardens - 12317 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, Lakewood, WA 98499

How volunteers will be used: We will start by offering the group that gathers a complimentary breakfast in our historic Wagner mansion, and then we will grab some buckets and get to work! There is no cost for this event or to enjoy the gardens on this day.
