Volunteer Opportunities

The following hospital volunteer opportunities are currently available. Placement in a volunteer position will depend on your skills matching the skills required by the position.

Chaplain Assistant

All facilities
Daily - 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Do you desire to provide companionship on spiritual, religious or emotional issues? Would you be comfortable offering prayer or ritual when requested?
The ideal candidate should have emotional and spiritual maturity and exceptional interpersonal skills. The candidate must provide a letter of endorsement from a representative of his/her faith community. A background, education and/or experience in ministry is also preferred or the candidate must complete Pastoral Care training within the first six months of volunteering. Volunteers accepted into this position must make a one-year commitment.


Clerical Assistant

All facilities
Monday-Friday - 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Do you like the atmosphere of the office environment?
Would you like to use your clerical skills? The ideal candidate needs to have proficient clerical skills. A background, education and/or experience within the health care setting is highly desired.


Community Outreach Assistant

Various sites through the Sound Sound Region
Days & times vary based on need.
Would you like to assist our staff at seminars and events?
The ideal candidate should be outgoing and approachable and willing to travel throughout the South Puget Sound region. Volunteers in this position assist at sponsored events with setup, registration and evaluations.


Doula

St. Joseph Medical Center only
Various days and times (based on need)
Would you like to support birthing mothers during labor and delivery?
The ideal candidate must show proof of attending a Doula training course through one of these organizations: Doulas of North America (DONA) or Association of Labor Assistants & Childbirth Education (ALACE) International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA), Childbirth or Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA).


Eucharistic Minister

All facilities
Daily - 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Do you have parish-based Eucharistic experience that you would be willing to share with our Catholic patients?
The ideal candidate must be a baptized, practicing Catholic and recommended by his/her parish priest. Completion of a 12-hour Eucharistic Ministry training program commissioned by the Catholic Church is also required.


Family Liaison

All facilities
Monday-Saturday - 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Are you sensitive to the needs of others? Do you like to work independently?
The ideal candidate should be comfortable in the hospital setting and must be able to cope with stressful situations, as well as be sensitive to the needs of others. Volunteers in this position work in Surgery Waiting areas monitoring patient status and assisting customers with information. A background, education and/or experience within the health care setting is highly desired.


Gift Shop Clerk

All facilities
Daily - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (times vary at each Gift Shop)
If you love to shop, we have an opportunity for you! The Gift Shop is staffed by volunteers and provides a needed service for our patients, their families and hospital staff. Funds generated by the Gift Shop help to support programs benefiting our community.
The ideal candidate should enjoy interacting with a variety of individuals. Will be required to stand or walk frequently during a shift. Must be comfortable counting and handling money. Computer skills, cash register or retail experience is highly desired.


Music Practitioner

St. Clare and St. Francis Hospitals only
Daily - 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Do you have the gift of music and believe in the healing power of music?
The ideal candidate should be proficient in a musical instrument and must have completed the Franciscan-sponsored Music for Healing and Transition Program. This is a study course recognizing music as a therapeutic enhancement to the healing process and the life/death transition. Volunteers provide bedside live music for patients to nurture the healing environment of the hospital.


Patient Care Assistant

All facilities
Daily - 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Are you compassionate and desire to interact with patients?
Would you like to provide comfort care and support? The ideal candidate should be comfortable in the hospital setting, must be able to cope with stress, tension and crisis situations and be sensitive to the needs of our customers. May be required to stand or walk frequently during a shift. A background, education and/or experience within the health care setting is highly desired.


Pet Partner

St. Francis Hospital and St. Joseph Medical Center only
Daily - 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Would you like to make our patients and visitors smile?
Do you have a pet that likes people? The ideal candidate should be comfortable in the hospital setting, must be able to cope with stress, tension and crisis situations and be sensitive to the needs of our customers. May be required to stand or walk frequently during a shift. Delta Society certification is required.


Pharmacy Clerk

All facilities
Monday-Saturdays - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Are you interested in working in a fast-paced, rigorous environment?
Do you have an interest in pursuing a future career in a pharmacy setting? The ideal candidate must have a current Washington State Department of Health Class B Pharmacy License. Will be required to stand or walk frequently during a shift. Computer skills or retail experience is highly desired.


Receptionist and Escort

All facilities
Daily - 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Are you an outgoing person? Do you like to stay busy and be on the go?
The ideal candidate should be comfortable interacting with a variety of people and must be able to answer phones and assist customers with directions and transporting. Will be required to stand or walk frequently during a shift. A background, education and/or experience within the health care setting is highly desired.
