Gastrointestinal (GI) screenings and procedures

The most common GI procedure performed at St. Elizabeth is the colonoscopy, which is considered the gold standard for detecting colon cancer. Performed under “conscious sedation,” patients are often amazed that this test causes essentially no discomfort. When using colonoscopy as a screening tool, The American Cancer Society recommends that men and women at average risk should have a "baseline" colonoscopy at age 50 and every 10 years after. This may be recommended earlier if there is a history of polyps or colon cancer in the family.

The second most frequently administered GI test is the upper endoscopy (EGD). This is performed on individuals who suffer from indigestion, ulcers and heartburn. With esophageal cancer on the rise, this test is the most definitive way to determine if cancer or a precancerous condition is present.

In addition to St. Elizabeth in Enumclaw, state-of-the-art GI facilities in Washington state include the eight CHI Franciscan Health hospitals in Bremerton, Burien, Federal Way, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Silverdale and Tacoma. Find more information here.
