Chest and Lung Robotic-assisted Surgery
For the treatment of chest and lung conditions, Franciscan’s expert team of doctors and surgeons in the Tacoma, Washington area are skilled and equipped to offer complete care from diagnosis and treatment, including surgery, to recovery and follow up. For non-cardiac cancerous and noncancerous conditions of the chest and lungs, it’s reassuring to know that minimally invasive surgical techniques are available, including da Vinci® robotic-assisted surgery.
Video-Assisted Thorascopic Surgery (VATS)
Minimally-invasive Video-Assisted Thorascopic Surgery (VATS) surgery is often used to treat early-stage lung cancer, allowing surgeons to view inside your chest and perform surgery without conventional open chest surgery. Franciscan’s thoracic surgeons have performed hundreds of VATS procedures. Your lung surgeon may use the da Vinci robotic-assisted VATS technique if it is determined that this is the best choice for you.
Both robotic-assisted lung surgery and conventional minimally-invasiveVATS lung procedures involve strategically placed smaller incisions – with no need to spread chest muscles or use rib separators – which can lead to less post-surgery pain and a significantly shorter hospital stay than with traditional open surgery.
da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery advantages
Robotic surgery may be considered for chest, lung or esophageal procedures depending on diagnosis, personal preference, age, activity level and other factors that are discussed between doctor and patient. The advantages of robotic-assisted surgery, when compared with traditional open surgery, may include:
- Less pain
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
- Shorter recovery time
- Better clinical outcomes
Whatever the treatment course for the chest and lungs, you can trust Franciscan’s highly skilled surgery team located throughout the South Puget Sound region of Washington State, and the advanced surgery suite at Tacoma’s St. Joseph Medical Center for robotic chest and lung surgery.
