Maternal Fetal Medicine
While choice and your own unique birth plan are important to you, the safe and healthy delivery of your newborn is of utmost importance to us. Our birth centers are also affiliated with the region’s most skilled specialty physicians and mid-level providers, such as perinatologists for pregnancies with higher risk factors. They are on-call 24/7 at Pacific Northwest Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinics in Tacoma, Federal Way, Burien and Gig Harbor.
Franciscan is proud to have the largest midwifery program in the South Sound.
Midwives are certified nurse-midwives who provide a comprehensive range of wellness and gynecological health services through all the stages of your life.
Certified nurse-midwives are specially trained and licensed to provide care from the time you are considering pregnancy, through labor and delivery, and can also provide your annual, breast, and pelvic exams, along with screenings and prescriptions. Our midwives work with you, listen to you, and help you make educated decisions about your health.
Considering pregnancy? Prenatal care with your midwife includes regular appointments where you receive all of the education, monitoring, and answers to your questions in preparation for your birth experience. They will assist you in developing your personalized birth plan and support you from early labor through deliver, within the safety and comfort of the Franciscan Family Birth Centers at St. Joseph and Highline. Board certified consulting physicians oversee complex patient care when necessary.

We also offer a supportive and nurturing Doula Program at the Family Birth Center at St. Joseph to round out the family birth services we provide.
Franciscan newborn providers
Having a baby is a big decision, and we want you to know your health is in the best hands. At Franciscan, we provide the complete continuum of care, from prenatal to post-delivery, providing the resources and information you need to care for both yourself and baby.
Consult our list of pediatricians and family practice newborn providers who are available by appointment to care for your newborn. We recommend selecting a newborn provider prior to your delivery date, in order to establish a connection between your baby and his/her provider while in the Family Birth Center.
