Duodenal Switch Weight Loss Surgery

Duo SwitchDuodenal switch weight loss surgery reduces the amount of calories absorbed by permanently altering the normal digestive process. Using a stapling device, a segment of the small intestine is divided and re-arranged. Approximately 85% of the stomach is removed creating a sleeve out of the remaining portion. The unused stomach section is removed. The procedure both reduces absorption and limits the amount of food that can be consumed.

Key information:

  • Utilized with morbidly obese patients with BMI > 50
  • Most surgery patients return to work in three to four weeks.
  • The procedure does not restrict types of food that can be eaten.
  • Weight loss may generally be greater with the duodenal switch procedure than sleeve gastrectomy or gastric banding.
  • No postoperative adjustments are required.
