Weight loss surgery facts*:

  • bariatric surgery-associated weight loss has been shown to improve or resolve diabetes in 86% of patients.
  • bariatric surgery-associated weight loss has been shown to resolve hypertension in 62% of patients.
  • obesity is associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer, and approximately 20% of all cancer in women is attributable to obesity.
  • bariatric surgery-associated weight loss has been shown to resolve sleep apnea in 86% of patients.

Effectiveness of Weight Loss Surgery

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Statement of 2005, surgery is the only way to obtain consistent, permanent weight loss for morbidly obese patients. Operative mortality rates in the hands of a skilled surgeon are low, ranging from 0.1% to 1%, depending upon the procedure performed. Additionally, savings from reduced treatment of comorbidities can result in ‘paying off’ the upfront cost of the surgery in two years.*
