We are Better Together

Dear Franciscan Friends and Supporters:

In the past fiscal year (July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013), our every action was in service of our mission to create healthier communities. That has not changed since the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia arrived in Tacoma in 1891 and established St. Joseph Hospital. Their healing ministry is a constant presence in our hospitals, outpatient centers, medical clinics and other care facilities.

This has been an exciting year for Franciscan. We finalized affiliation agreements with Highline Medical Center in Burien and Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton and Silverdale. The Franciscan family now extends from South Puget Sound to West Seattle to the Olympic Peninsula. We are excited to have these fine medical facilities, doctors, nurses and staff members as a part of our system.

Franciscan has also been growing from the ground up. We opened new, state-of-the-art medical facilities in Tacoma, next door to St. Joseph Medical Center, and out on the eastern plateau in Bonney Lake. In 2014, we will open another new facility in Auburn. The design of these facilities allows our providers to function more efficiently and creates a consistent patient experience.

Health care systems around the country are working to implement changes to comply with federal health care reform. One of those changes is the deployment of electronic medical records. Franciscan chose the gold standard of systems, Epic, which we rolled out to a number of our clinics and four of our hospitals this year. It was a monumental undertaking that touched every facet of our organization. Many people spent long hours to ensure that our patient care was not impacted during the implementation. As we look ahead to 2014 when we install Epic at Highline and Harrison and their clinic networks, I want to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who made this massive endeavor possible.

I am extremely proud of all that we have accomplished this year. This Report to the Community offers a few of highlights of our activities this year. You will see how our values and the Sisters of St. Francis’ legacy of care and compassion distinguish The CHI Franciscan Health to this day.

Thank you.
